It is our 3rd day in the Hengling Village. In the morning we invited Meng Jin Feng to demonstrate us how to use the weaving machine to create beautiful scarves. The work requires skills, precision and patience: it takes about two days to complete a piece and if the weaver makes a mistake, she has to undo the work and redo it again. Meng Jin Feng started learning two years ago, after watching her mother and grandmother working. The rest of the morning was dedicated to the design project: after each student selected a concept to work on the workshop became alive: sensors were wired, code was tested and paper prototypes were developed.

In the afternoon we drove to the town of Pingtan and quickly visited the local silver store; unfortunately we couldn’t observe the making process of the jewelry. Next stop was Zhongbu village, where we were able to see the local women gathered in the laboratory to weave shoes out of straw: it is a social activity that they engage in in their spare time to stay together and chat. We encountered the same scene in the village of Pingri, where older women meet to make the Lucky flowers, small decorations that swing in the wind, to be hung in the Drum-tower, in new houses and other social buildings for good luck. The Lucky flowers are embellished with colorful threads, beams and feathers. We were welcome with enthusiasm and the women taught us how to make the lucky flowers; this might be really useful for the design project!
