In the following two weeks, the team is to build a mobile maker space and gather local people, students and designers to co-design an interactive musical box. The basic idea is to combine local cultural elements, special local techniques, digital hardware techniques and design techniques to implement design ideas and make interactive working demo.

The innovation team arrived in Henglin Village, Tongdao county on July 15th noon, after lunch Nick and Wei arranged the task for everyone in the afternoon - culture probe. At 14:00 students set out to visit local houses and facilities and to interview local people, to feel the local Dong culture, and to look for inspiring local features and interesting cultural elements. Before dinner, Nick and Wei organized a meeting to share the findings and ideas. After, a schedule for the next day is worked out by the group.

On the 16th of July the day schedule started with some brainstorming in the workshop. The students researched with the workshop coordinators on the design of the Dong Music Box reflecting on cultural meanings, forms for the designs, interaction modality and the sounds we wanted to preserve and share from the local culture. Local materials as bamboo sticks, weaves of reeds leaves, baskets, drum towers architecture and its uses, local instruments, provided inspiration. We presented and shared our ideas using colored post-its on a board on the wall.

After lunch the group went to Huangdu village to study the traditional culture and music, enjoying and recording several performances from local musicians playing together or showing instruments. The sounds recorded can be used later in our Dong Music Boxes and showcased in the Hunan University shop together with past work from New Channel Summer Camp.

In the evening, the cultural experience and the conversations with the village inhabitants and visitors were shared to decide which designs could be prototyped during the time of the summer camp.

It is our 3rd day in the Hengling Village. In the morning we invited Meng Jin Feng to demonstrate us how to use the weaving machine to create beautiful scarves. The work requires skills, precision and patience: it takes about two days to complete a piece and if the weaver makes a mistake, she has to undo the work and redo it again. Meng Jin Feng started learning two years ago, after watching her mother and grandmother working. The rest of the morning was dedicated to the design project: after each student selected a concept to work on the workshop became alive: sensors were wired, code was tested and paper prototypes were developed.

In the afternoon we drove to the town of Pingtan and quickly visited the local silver store; unfortunately we couldn’t observe the making process of the jewelry. Next stop was Zhongbu village, where we were able to see the local women gathered in the laboratory to weave shoes out of straw: it is a social activity that they engage in in their spare time to stay together and chat. We encountered the same scene in the village of Pingri, where older women meet to make the Lucky flowers, small decorations that swing in the wind, to be hung in the Drum-tower, in new houses and other social buildings for good luck. The Lucky flowers are embellished with colorful threads, beams and feathers. We were welcome with enthusiasm and the women taught us how to make the lucky flowers; this might be really useful for the design project!
